5G in India

Technology is critical to India’s digital ambition.

A huge buzz has been created regarding the advent of 5G technology in India. More than 40 telecom operators have already launched 5G across the globe.  India, having the second biggest smartphone market in the world, is all geared up for the release of 5G Technology. widespread access to data is gaining more and more importance and that is the thrive for the advent of 5G.

 Advantages of 5G over 4G?

5G technology uses a new radio technology and a different network architecture to deliver higher bandwidth and lower latency than 4G and 3G networks that exist now. The speed that 5G networks are expected to offer is up to 10 Gbps. On comparing it with 4G networks we can infer that is approximately 100 times faster than the 100 Mbps of 4G. The time for data to travel from one phone to a distant server, is expected to be less than a millisecond in 5G networks. This is also approximately 100 times better than 4G that is available today. So we can infer that, for a country like India where technological advancements are rapidly accepted by the people, the advent of 5G technology will revolutionize the digital market.

Why 5G?

What had made the need for 5G inevitable?  Let us see certain important points:

1.  The constantly evolving need for higher speed -  People have always been keenly interested in the data networks with higher speed. With the advent of 4G, they all had seen a tremendous increase in the speed of network. But what 5G promises is much more than that. 5G is expected to provide a much more faster network which will be accepted by the crowd with both hands.

2. Interesting data plans for smart cities - Data recharge plans at affordable cost has been the need of the era. 5G is said to bring faster networks at affordable rates through attractive data plans. This is something that has been always awaited.

3.  Industrial automation - Every sector of the society is getting automated. With the advent of Industry 4.0, all the sectors of the society has been revolutionized. This poses the need for more advanced internet technologies. This is where the need of 5G comes.

4.    Connected devices - With the advancement of technology, all the devices are interconnected. World wide web has played a major role in connecting devices all across the globe. This poses the need for more faster and efficient internet connectivity.

These are few facts that made the huge buzz regarding the advent of 5G.

4 Foundational Blocks for the 5G Technology

1. Spectrum Availability- The spectrum requirement of 5G is 300 MHz in the mid-band spectrum of the 3.3-3.6 GHz. This has been said to be set up by the Department of telecommunications (DoT).

Benefits: offers good coverage, High speedWide international consensus.

2. Technology- 5G technology will require upwards of 80% fiberisation. This   is really high when compared to  most operators operating at about 20-25% fiberisation. 5G deployment will require overcoming several similar technological and operational challenges.

3.  Economics- The 5G technology will be leading to a huge technological crisis. Telecom operators are already burdened with debt of around Rs 4 lakh crore. 5G will pose an even higher crisis to them.

4. Policy- The spectrum policy must be focusing  on incentivising heavy investment in 5G, including support for long-term, exclusive, technology-neutral spectrum licences.

India’s network operators have applied to the government for permission to conduct field trials. They have also  selected one or more equipment vendors to collaborate with. One among them is Reliance Jio which plans to develop its own 5G technology to make India self reliant. It would be in accordance with the  Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative adopted by the government . It would play a major role in the effort to reinvigorate the economy during the corona-virus pandemic.

5G networks were expected to be launched in India by late 2020 or early 2021. Now, reports reveal that 5G advent will happen only in mid 2021.Various phones with 5G support were launched in India awaiting the welcome of the new Technology.

Conclusion

We are all waiting keenly to have 5G technology in India. This technology has always promised a revolution in the connectivity sector across the globe. This would also be a huge revolution to the entire digital market and would surely  lead to the advancement of the country in the Digital arena. Let us be thrilled and wait calmly for the new technology.
