Classification of Computers

Computers are mainly of three types: Digital, Analog and Hybrid. Digital computers are further classified into four categories: Micro Computers, Mini Computers, Mainframe Computers, Super Computers.

Fig: Classification Of Computer Based on size

    1. Micro Computers: It is defined as a computer that has microprocessor as its CPU. performs some basic operations like taking Input, Storing data, Processing data, Giving Output, Controlling all operations.

    2. Mini Computer: Medium sized computer that is more powerful than the micro- computer. The minicomputer is usually designed for serving multiple users simultaneously. Mini computers are popular in computing system among the business and research organizations. In today, they are more expensive than microcomputer.

    3. Mainframe Computers: It is useful for information processing of various organizations like Banking, Insurance, Hospital, Railways. Mainframe computers are placed in a central location and are connected to several user terminals acts as a access station. It may be located in the same building. It is larger and expensive as compared to the mini computer.

    4. Super Computers: It is the most powerful and expensive computer available at present. It is the fastest one than the any other available computers. It is mainly used for complex, scientific applications which are higher level of programming. It can be used for Weather forecasting, Climate research, Molecular modelling, Chemical compounds, Aeroplane stimulation, Nuclear research, etc. It is multiprocessing and parallel processing technology to solve complex problems into a smaller one. The speed of Super computer is measured in FLOPS(Floating Point Operation Per Second).
