Augmented Reality VS Virtual Reality
What is a Augmented Reality (AR)?
Augmented reality (AR) is the technology that expands our physical world, adding layers of digital information onto it.unlike virtual reality. Augmented reality does not create the whole artificial environments to replace real with a virtual one. AR appears in direct view of an existing environment and adds sounds , videos ,graphics to it. A combination of a real scene viewed by a user and virtual scene generated by a computer that augmented the scene with additional information.
There are four types of augmented reality
- Markerless AR
- Marker-based AR
- Projection-based AR
- Superimposition-based AR
What is a Virtual Reality (VR)?
Virtual reality (VR) means feeling the imaginary(virtual) world, rather than the real one. The imaginary world is a simulation running in a computer. It is the term used for computer generated 3D environments that allow the user to enter and interact with alternate realities.
the definition of ' Virtual ' is near and ' Reality ' is what we experience as human beings.
There are three types of Virtual reality
- Immersive Virtual Reality
- Non-immersive Virtual Reality
- Window on world Virtual Reality

Some example of AR and VR
Augmented Reality:
- Snapchat filters
- Disney Colouring book
- Sunseeker
- Pokemon go
- Google cardboard-Google VR
- Volvo reality
- Better cloud VR
- Matterport 3D space
Technologies of AR
- Slam:- Slam(simultaneous localization and mapping) is the most effective way to render virtual image over real world object it simultaneously localizes sensors with respect to their surroundings, while at the same time mapping the structure of the environment.
- Location based:- Contrary to recognition based,location-based AR relies on a GPS, digital compass, velocity meter, or accelerometer to provide data about the location and the augmented reality visualization are activated based on these inputs.
Technologies of VR
- Data glove:Outfitted with sensors on the fingers as well as an overall position /orientation tracking equipment. Enables natural interaction with virtual objects by hand gesture recognition.
- Head-Mounted Display (HMD):-A helmet or a face mask providing the visual and auditory displays.it is use LCD or CRT to display stereo images. It may include built-in head-tracker and stereo headphones.
Augmented reality(AR) are far behind Virtual reality(VR) in terms of maturity.AR is a relatively new field, where most of the research efforts have occurred in the pas few years. Because of the numerous challenges and unexplored avenues in this area, VR will remain a vibrant area of research for at least the next several years . After the basic problems with AR are solved, the ultimate goal will be to generated virtual object that are so realistic that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real environment.
It will be important to incorporate lessons learned from mobility. virtual reality and augmented reality into the overall experience of blending the visualization of complex data with the physical world.
